Your photos and your data

Matisse edits your photos on your device. There is no account system and no cloud workspace, so there is nowhere for a photo to be uploaded to and nothing for us to hold on your behalf.

What photo access is for

Matisse asks for photo access so you can browse your library, open an image, and save an edited copy back. That is the whole of it. If you grant access to only a selection of photos, Matisse sees only those.

Saving uses add-only permission, so the app can write a new image but cannot modify or delete anything already in your library.

The AI features run on device

Finding a subject, detecting the sky, separating vegetation from architecture, straightening a horizon with Upright, and the automatic light adjustment all run locally using the device’s own machine-learning support. Nothing is sent anywhere to compute them, which is why they keep working in aeroplane mode. See masks.

What Matisse does not do

• No account, no sign-in, no profile.
• No cloud sync and no server-side photo storage.
• No advertising SDKs.
• No third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.

Location data

Photos usually carry the coordinates of where they were taken. Matisse can strip that from an exported file; see exporting.
