Setting up API keys
Where to get a key for Google, OpenAI, fal.ai, OpenRouter and Anthropic, and how to add them to the app.
Monet does not resell image generation. You bring a key from each service you want to use, and requests are billed to you by that service. Keys live in Settings → Providers, are stored locally on your computer, and are only ever used to authenticate requests to the service they belong to.
You need at least one of Google, OpenAI, fal.ai or OpenRouter. Add more later at any time; each key simply unlocks its own models.
| Key | Unlocks | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini | Nanobanana Pro and Nanobanana 2 | aistudio.google.com/app/apikey |
| OpenAI | GPT Image 2 and GPT Image 1.5 | platform.openai.com/api-keys |
| fal.ai | Seedream 5.0 Pro | fal.ai/dashboard/keys |
| OpenRouter | FLUX.2 Pro and Riverflow V2.5 Pro | openrouter.ai/keys |
| Anthropic | Chat orchestration (optional) | console.anthropic.com/settings/keys |
Step by step
- Google Gemini. Open aistudio.google.com/app/apikey. Choose Create API key and copy it. Paste it into the provider’s row under Settings → Providers and choose Save.
- OpenAI. Open platform.openai.com/api-keys. Choose Create new secret key and copy it straight away, because OpenAI shows it only once. Make sure API billing is enabled. Paste it into the provider’s row under Settings → Providers and choose Save.
- fal.ai. Open fal.ai/dashboard/keys. Create a key in the fal.ai dashboard and copy it. Paste it into the provider’s row under Settings → Providers and choose Save.
- OpenRouter. Open openrouter.ai/keys. Create a key on the OpenRouter keys page and copy it. Paste it into the provider’s row under Settings → Providers and choose Save.
- Anthropic. Open console.anthropic.com/settings/keys. Choose Create Key and copy it. Only needed if you want Claude deciding what Chat does; Google or OpenAI can handle that instead. Paste it into the provider’s row under Settings → Providers and choose Save.
If a key already exists in the app’s environment, Monet picks it up by itself and marks the row Autodetected, with nothing to set up. A key you type in overrides the detected one.
Background removal is the one feature that needs no key at all. It runs locally on your computer, so it works offline and costs nothing per image.
